The background pattern in the sample in fact is repeatedly saying JURRIAANSCHROFER and was created from this same font.

Something cool I noticed: At Pixel size, the font entirely disappears!

Oh it disappears at point sizes: 2, 4, and 20

Can you do a comparison of fontsizes with and without smooth edges?

So it only works well at large sizes when using it how it was intended

So, if you are using it at 20 pixels, make sure that you have anti-aliasing on... Also, I wonder what it looks like at 20 points with anti-aliasing on...

Oh and only in Adobe Photoshop it is showing this behaviour. Viewed in FontLab and FontViewer it is not disappearing!
