Nice work, Your Royal Funkiness. :-)

I can almost feel the tension.

Sorry to nitpick, but the 'belt' cannot have a sharp edge as it is threaded between the gears/wheels. W needs smoothing.

But, wowwee is it cool.

thanks, friends.

@p2p - i may have to brush off my flash skills and give it a go :)

@ fontqueen100 - thanks.

@ ixel - thanks. still plenty of belts - conveyor, assembly line, etc. but for now this is it :)

@ square_peg - trying to keep the funk alive :)

@ thal - thanks. not sure which area of W you're referring to. let me know if it still bugs you.

@ wongtaw - thanks for the encouragement.

@ afrojet - thanks ;)

Brilliant idea! It looks like the big mail sorting machines at Royal Mail. 10/10

I can't help, but it somewhat illustrates the situation with FS. Q: How could have happened that this real gem evaded my attention for several days? I've checked the new fontstructions every day. A: FS works like a digital conveyor belt. As new fonts (or doodles, in many cases) are added every minute, the latest ones push down the others on the Gallery list. On a busy day a new font could have very brief exposure on the front page, if any at all. Sometimes a technical glitch could rob this opportunity forever. Before long they find themselves on the bottom of the second, third, fourth page, as the "conveyor belt" relentlessly carries them toward oblivion. There is something fundamentally wrong with this linear model.

interesting analogy frodo. and perhaps maybe nothing can be really done about it since it's the nature of the beast. maybe we should have a 'conveyor belt' feature here on FS - what i mean is a ticker that would continuously scroll all top picks and new fonts for 1 or 2 days. maybe that would give a little better exposure to all fonts :)

@funk_king: "...nothing can be really done about it since it's the nature of the beast." Maybe we can ask the creators of the beast to make some slight modifications.

One would be to eliminate the 10 font per page limit, so as to be able to scroll down happily and untrammeled. The fontstructions already load dynamically. The Fontshop advert could be on the side, and perhaps more than just one at a time.

My second thought is to have real Gallery similar to those of photo galleries, showing small previews or pre-rendered shots/demo pics of the fonts. Click on them, and a large preview will appear, the rest of the screen goes dimm. It is very common solution nowadays on the web, and can be done with Flash or AJAX.

My third thought was to separate the wheat from the chaff, get rid of the rubbish as soon as possible. To do that easily we need a check box, similar to those of spam filters, labeled as "Pixel Noise", "Doodle", Scribble" or "Chaff". If you click/check that box it would remove those works from your gallery. You can recover them by selecting the "Show all" option. I know it sounds harsh, but we are already inundated by thousands of works and their number grows exponentially. How long would it take to browse through the Top Pics at the present pedestrian pace: 1709 Top Pics, 10 on a page, that is 171 pages. Or the 8419 public Fontstructions, on 842 pages? There are many good works, but not Top Picks out there you can never see, unless you've got extraordinary patience, stamina, and lots of time and provisions.

Fourth. It would be useful to sort the Fontstructions by basic categories, such as pixel/bitmap, handwriting, serif, sans serif, display, blackletter, experimental, 3D, etc. If you do mainly display fonts, you can follow the new releases in that category without having to go through the whole crop.

I know this comment should be on FontMoot, and I certainly will copy and paste it there too.
