Sort of like an old script, huh? Feel free to clone it if you want to check it out. Feel free, also, to download it, if you want to make me do this face :), only in real life. Any suggestions for the letters? As it stands, it's W.I.P., and if anybody has any suggestions, throw em out there.

It's basically a vastly improved, and overdue, version of A Stroke of Geneus1. Slightly more characters and much better glyphs make for a better font, overall.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 25th october 2011
A real beauty - I'm still looking for the 'quill-pen' function in FS that you must have used.

Just a small point, but the dots of the 'i' and 'j' are not very clear - may need a wee bit of separation from the top of the stroke.
Comment by p2pnut 25th october 2011
Thanks, Ray. No 'quill-pen', although that would be nice.

I fixed the i and the j, per your request . . . I got a little bit lazy, I must admit; I just raised the dots. But there doesn't seem to be a better way to do it. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Spot on!

I'm extremely grateful toward whoever voted this a 4.

And in case you didn't catch it, that's sarcasm.

The down-voters are a surly and irascible bunch. Who could explain their biliousness? But don’t let the naysayers and petty dart throwers tear you down. You created some real beauty here, Xeno! No one can take that from you. I’ve got a new one to live by: Taste makes waste!
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 2nd november 2011
Congratulations! FontStruct Staff have deemed your FontStruction worthy of special mention. “xe Bard” is now a Top Pick.
Comment by Rob Meek (meek) 3rd november 2011
I think the TP more than trumps the misguided '4' :)
Comment by p2pnut 3rd november 2011
@williaum: Don't quite understand the "new one" you've decided to live by, but I appreciate the eloquent choice of words and showers of praise you're drowning me under. :)

@meek: Every time's like the first. Well . . . no, not exactly. Every time's like the second. You can't beat how you feel when you get your first TP.

@pnut: Too right you are. I was actually beginning to worry that nobody besides you would comment on this; it was getting buried under a pile of UWE creations, and I was worried Bard would toil in their shadows. But I'm glad I could get a TP. Relieved, actually.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 3rd november 2011
...You know, it’s an aphorism, a maxim: short, pithy words expressing a general truth. Useful words to live, but not die, by. But it’s also a play on words.

I took Haste makes waste and the provincial idiom There’s no accounting for taste, mashed them up proper, and – wham-presto – came up with the above wry remark.

You see, people make snap judgements – the so-called first impression – and seem attached to the point of irrationality in acting upon and defending them. E.g.: A mom serves overcooked brussels sprouts to a child; that child hates brussels sprouts for a loooooong time. What a waste of such delicious nourishment on the menu!

These “gut feelings” must come from one nauseated society, which perhaps bespeaks all the biliousness. “Why don’t you like it?” “I don’t know. It sucks, I hate it!”

Trying to base our feelings of wellness and success on the feedback of such curt and dyspeptic people is a total waste of consciousness. Unless you’re interested in the core problems – then make sure you bring a roto-rooter!

The play on word, of course, is that when we “taste” we make “waste”. It either comes out one end or the other – depending on how well we ruminate and digest our experiences! ;)

That may be the most philosophical thing I've ever read on FontStruct.

But I see where you're going with that. Tell me if I've got this right . . . I shouldn't feel bad about that one little 4, because people
(trolls COUGH)
make "snap judgments", as you say, and vote random fonts low ratings because, say, they don't like the genre of the font (i.e. blackletter and script, this one), or maybe the fontstructor who made this font had said something critical about their fonts. Therefore, this 4 ought to slide off my back like water off a duck's.

Have I got that right?

@Xeno : i wonder how you would have reacted if you had suffered what i did with Janking and her alikes...
Comment by Abneurone Fluid Types 9th november 2011
I don't know. You appear to have unshared every last one of your fonts. I don't mean to sound rude.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 9th november 2011
Can you explain what you mean?
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 9th november 2011
The only thing that I might change would be the Q. You could extend the tail horizontally instead of vertically. I love the P, a, w, e, and the numbers.
Comment by sarreyn 9th november 2011
@Xenophilius: So you weren't there... I'm happy for you that you didn't witness this miserable event in FS some months ago. I received so much unjustified personal hate from this person (and i think it was the 3rd time in one year, but this time it went really far), that it still hurts me a bit when i evoke it. This was certainly not the only reason why i finally decided to unshare my works, take some distance from FS and redevelop elsewhere from zero a new, more mature portfolio, but it surely helped... For now, i work better like this, but when i have achieved (or so) this portfolio which demands extreme concentration, maybe i'll reconsider a more effective FS participation, even if it still makes me a little sad to see how Meek doesn't recognize nor support my work as i think it would deserves it for its creativity and needs it because it is unusual and not formatted in traditional styles...
Sorry Xeno for this input but you asked... you can hide now if you want this comment which has nothing to do with your font. It was just that your deception about the 4 reminded me this bad week (it was unfinishable), and that there is room to hurt much more on FS. (i was treated like a mentally retarded, brain damaged, a 5 year old child could do better than me in 5 mn when some of my works took more than 1 year of hard work, the same trial finally that the nazis made to the "degenerated artists" which were the most creative and innovative of their time and refused the "academic dictature" to open new ways, new doors...
Comment by Abneurone Fluid Types 9th november 2011
@xeno: Yeah, you nailed it. If someone has something heartfelt or intelligent to offer – even if it rings one’s bell as an eviscerating critique – there may be some great value in chewing on it for a minute. But voting with a number (high or low), lobbing hateful and denigrating sentiments – or even high but empty, cotton-candy praise – I think these do not merit more than a second’s thought.

Here’s another one: Haters gonna HATE! But don’t ever let ’em steal your smile. Peace.
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 9th november 2011
@neurone: What? I'll not hide any comments. The only ones I hide are the accidental repeats, of which I've had to hide several.

Janking is one of those "snap judges"--forgive me for stealing your phrase, williaum--but I've not heard of anything like that on Fontstruct. That must have been while I was . . . away . . . that is, suffering in the pits of a MineCraft addiction. Anyway, I thought I had it bad, with a four vote . . . Such actions have no place on FontStruct.

Janking did, indeed, judge snappishly. She took a look at your fonts with barely a brush of the eyes, and I see what she may have seen at first--your fonts seem, initially, to be chaotic and rambling. It's not until I look closely that I see order come out of the chaos, and I see the extraordinary brainpower and work behind it. Janking is really one to talk: Two FontStructions in total. To make you feel better, I've always massively admired your work, and (no joke) identify your work with the likes of Geneus1, and of course, the notorious williaum. Janking compared you to a five year old, and a Nazi (I think), and she had no right, nor no justification, to do so.

Your fonts give FontStruct diversity, and (almost) everybody admires your deviation from the orderly and normal. Don't every stop FontStructing, please.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 10th november 2011
@williaum: More philisophicality (YES, I KNOW THAT'S NOT A WORD!) from you. It took me a moment to chew that over--several moments, actually. Beaucoup moments.

So . . . to simplify what you've said again . . . if somebody has good advice to give--even if it strikes somebody as being too harsh or unfair--it would do good to think about it. But if somebody is blindly voting either high or low, or giving "empty" comments that have no meaning, ignore them.

Have I got that right?

Also, I appreciate you giving me a pat on the back and lightening the load that this four has placed on my back. Just kidding--I can't look at four votes any more after neurone's comment. He's got it hard--I got one four vote and the rest were tens, as well as one nine from somebody who is slightly more harsh of a judge, but nonetheless wise.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 10th november 2011
@sarreyn: The praise has me tickled, just delighted! And I agree about the Q, but exactly what you suggested would not go with the style of this font. But I do see that more can be done with it.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 10th november 2011
One possible way to mitigate against trolling votes would be to remove anonymity ... votes could be accompanied by an auto-generated Comment on the following lines:

P2pnut rated xe Bard 10

xyz rated xe Bard 4

Trolls don't seem to like the light of day and this might reduce such activity.

With regard to the traumatic events experienced by neurone error I would just like to add my final thought (a variation on will.i.ૐ's far more succinct phrase above). At the end of the day ne still retains his talent, skills and artistic integrity; janking retains nothing but the opprobrium that she probably has to face in the real (offline) world as well.
Comment by p2pnut 10th november 2011
That’s it! I’m changing my username to The Notorious W.I.ૐ. ;)

As far as I know Snap judge – as in one who judges “snappishly” – is a newly coined phrase on your part, Xeno. No klepto. And I smiled reading it.

I’m inspired to riff on that note.

Snap Judge is very good, but I think it gives trolls too much machismo and badass credential (like some kinda Samurai Stallone). So how about Snap Judies (or Snap Janes to emphasize their anonymity)?

Then we have the Snap Wagon which is the whole milieu of trolling – but also the coterie of high and mighty design professionals who see it their role to quickly and anonymously downvote “overrated” fontstructions without taking their valuable time to lend any informed commentary on how a given design could be improved.

Son, get off your high horse and hop out the back of that Snap Wagon!

@p2pnut: Meek has emphasized that he will keep voting anonymous as publishing voting history will likely reduce the number of total votes in the system – which I think is actually your point. You see the positive side of this, but he sees the negative. The idea, briefly, is that the voting system works to eliminate aberrant votes as long as it accumulates a larger and larger body of votes. So meek doesn’t want raise the barrier to voting anymore than the requirement of having a user account.

Opprobrium, what a choice word, and a new one for me. Thanks! :~)

@meek: Publishing votes is an unlikely scenario (even considering the low total quantity of votes these days). How about publishing “favorites” in (or above) the comment stream? We can go to every fontstructor’s page and browse their favorites – so they are already published – but it is otherwise an overly difficult to track down who has favorited what. I think this is useful and valuable information for creators who publish their works. Also, publishing “favs” or “likes” at the top of comment streams is a common expectation for some other social networking sites.
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 10th november 2011
You don't be affraid about the troll's votes, compañero. Your font is yours and we appreciate your works with our comments better than the votes, believe me. The trolls exist, but they all live in the underground and they can't make truly good fonts, thats why they don't like let the life run funny for us. The work is shown so.

@p2pnut: Good idea, but I'm going to have to agree with THE NOTORIOUS WILLIAUM. The eloquency of the last paragraph was charismatic.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 11th november 2011
@THE NOTORIOUS WILLIAUM: It's cool. Nobody's miffed about the HTML. In fact, I was guilty of that myself--I went through a grossly immature phrase in which I added open HTML tags to the end of my comments. I thought it was all in good fun, until I was reprimanded by Meek . . . Apparently it was screwing up the live feed.

Anyway, I really like your ideas about the name for trolls--"Snap Judies" or "Snap Janes" . . . you're right about "Snap Judge" being too badass. And the "Snap Wagon" for trolling in general. I love it all. And I, too, smiled reading what you wrote about the "Snap Janes". Especially insulting if the troll is a male.

I heartily agree with everything you suggested in your comment, as well.
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 11th november 2011
@elmo: Ah, gee! How can I be miffed about the 4 vote after seeing what neurone lived through? Thanks, as always, for your support . . . maestro. (No sarcasm intended)

I take the point about retaining the annonymity of voting - yet another reflection of the wisdom of Mr M. :)
Comment by p2pnut 11th november 2011
Made a major change to some of the loops in the letters--the lower curve on the C, E, L, c, and e had a very awkward-looking flat part to them because I couldn't figure out how to make a three-long composite to fill in the whole distance on the curves. But I figured it out.

Let me explain that better. The very end of the lower loop on the aforementioned letters (do you see the 3x1 diagonal on the end there?) were actually a single brick followed by a regular 2x1 diagonal, until I discovered in a different font how to wrangle out a 3x1 curve using 2 different composites. It was ridiculously complicated, but I managed it.

If this website could give someone more than a 10, I'd give it to this font for sure.
