It's very close to a modular alphabet developed by Josef Albers.

yes i knew that one from albers. maybe it was stuck in my head and that's why it's close. i knew that this had been done before but i was keen to see what i could get up with using the same concept.
Here is the Albers alphabet as I had seen it once. There are also strong differences. But I agree that the basic concept isn't new and I'm sure there could be fonts out there that are even closer.
