'PASTE'
A font which can be used to add a handrawn effect. The font evolved from me intially using toothpaste to create an alphabet and finding it effective , My aim was to try and recreate similair characteristics within my font. The tootpaste flicked off at the ends and collected in certain areas which created a really intersting typographical style. The lines are wobbly and unique on each letter as I wanted the font to have movement, energy and a bounce.
With the given theme of Protection, I looked into the human immune system and the biological human features. Researching further into antibodies, I created a type face of the antibody structure which resembles the shape of a capital Y. Following symmetrical shapes and doubled lines, I created an alphabet that mimics the original structure of antibodies, with similar joints and angles.

This is my first Construction based on the theme of "Rebirth". I chose this theme as I wanted to investigate how a country is "reborn" after a war or a revolution. This led me to read an article about graphic design ideas that came from the Russian Revolution. One of them was Constructivist typography-combination of contrasting shapes and sizes. I looked at the work of El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko. From this research I began to cut out shapes of different sizes and began to construct letters- however, this idea didn't translate well in FontStruct. To widen my research, I looked at Constructivist and Soviet Brutalist architecture which my font was inspired by. It reflects buildings like the Polytechnic Institute of Minsk, The Palace of Ceremonies, and the Georgian Ministry of Highways in Tbilisi.
My first digitally rendered typeface that focused around the theme of energy and its synonyms. I wanted to explore a typeface that would create the illusion of movement without using decorative elements such as gradients, serifs or superfluous details.
The minimalistic approach was inspired by typefaces designed by Paul Rand and the concept was inspired by 'sans forgetica'
This is a cloneThis character set is inspired by the ironwork of balcony railings on Clifton's Victorian buildings. Based on the theme "elegant", I intended to capture the "elegance" portrayed by these ornate artworks, and so the internal patterns are based on actual pattern works from the iron railings. I felt that a set of capitals best captured the almost boastful and eye-catching nature of the railings.
Inspired by George Orwell's '1984', the Dystematic font largely revolves around the concepts of societal collapse and dystopia. The hybrid of the words 'dystopia' and 'systematic' hint at the notion of overcivilisation leading to systemic collapse. The imagery within the type suggest broken buildings with revealed scaffolding/foundations which was inspired by concept art pieces of post-apocalyptic societies. The subject of systematic futility can be largely relative to the political and socioeconomic polarity we are currently seeing in the UK and the US.
This font is based of the theme 'gregarious'. For this I looked into coral reefs and sea anemone, then developed ideas through print making with acrylic paint and sponges. The type face is inspired by the flowing nature of the sea anemone and how some sea creatures/ plants grow upwards towards the sun. Eventually the type began to look more like flames/ smoke than a plant, which I decided to focus on instead. This shows how a project can completely change from the initial idea and just how it is important to always develop further taking into account others opinions and thoughts.
This is my fonstruction based on the theme protect. I decided to go with the topic of glass. I was thinking about the different materials surrounding protection and thought glass suited the idea best as it protects many things in our everyday lives. I experiemnted with this topic by looking at the different types of glass and how they could be smashed or broken. I took and image of a broken wine bottle and tried to make the letters look like those specific pieces.
Concept lettering based around the theme of 'incompleteness'. The typeface features a consistent negative space element, which both divides and completes individual letters. The font began as a experiment in which glyphs could be reduced to while still remaining legible before evolving into its current form.
This concept is currently being developed furver.
Inspired by the idea of how newspapers are printed to protect us, I've created my first fontstruction for the start of my UWE graphic design course. I drew the letters by hand using black ink and a quill that sort of created this idea of the ink that is used in newspapers. Therefore, creating this abstract font design.
After watching a documentary on how the elderly are often lonely and forgotten about, it inspired me to create this font detailing the feeling of isolation and becoming disconnected from a community.
The circles that make up the font represent individuals in a community. I chose to have a number of the circles grouped, then others separated, illustrating how one can be surrounded by people but still feel isolated and alone. As this is a common issue in the world today, I found it appropriate to portray this struggle, especially with current world-wide events.
This is my font 'Lips me' thsi font is based on writing with lipstick and copying the marks and texture that is created. I think that its worked effectively and has the look of letters written in lipstick.
My intention with this font was to link it to "Rebirth", so I thought about computer viruses. I looked into glitches and how they distort and warp the computer to such an extent that you'd have to reboot your computer. In other words, the Rebirth of your computer.
Revive is the first Iteration of a font inspired and designed to celebrate a rebirth in urban environments. I focussed on using simple geometric shapes and simplifying the feeling I wanted to convey with my font. By moving the x height of the letters really close to the cap height I tried to recreate the illusion of perspective, as if you were looking at a building from an “ants eye view” This helped convey a feeling of growth and structure representing the re-birth of nature and cities together.
My first drawings of these letters were from freeze frames of martial arts films. I explored the idea of a human body posed, ready to fight an opponent, essentially becoming 'dangerous' letters - this was the key word I chose. These were then refined using the FontStruct userface into this blocky style and incoparating elements from Roman capitals.
For my chosen theme Community (specifically biological community)
I decided to work with a worm/snake shape. Trying to figure out the final letter shapes during the creative process I got inspired by the snake game I'm sure everyone played on their old Nokia including me.
I observed the snake's movements in the game and created a typeface based on that. I would characterize my typeface as a simple combination of retro and modern at the same time.

The industrial revolution gave rise to mass manufacturing; whereby machinery replaced humans, and production snowballed. Textiles were being produced at a rapid speed and in vast quantity, and it was also a pivotal time for print - with the fist linotype machine being invented at around 1883. Mechanised printing meant that newspapers' expansion paralleled the rising population. 'Strength' is a typeface inspired by the widespread industrialisation. The sans serif and square letterforms are a reference to the vast number of red brick factories being erected - the square shape of the font mirroring the literal building blocks.
I am a UWE graphic desgin student designing a font based from the theme community. I focused on using lines and dots that individually would not create a letter however, when put together form the alphabet. Therefore, it is necessary to have all elements working together to create the font.
