ORIENTFAHRTEN (Pro) — Semi-connected script-style font design

Losely based on the lettering that was seen on a 1929 poster design by German painter Ottomar Carl Joseph Anton (1895-1976) for the “Hamburg-Amerika Line” * (click for image of the original poster)
Whereas the original (non-Pro)-version aimed at extracting that “stylistic essence” of the lettering, and made an attempt at extrapolating and restoring a full alphabet from the letters provided by the original poster.. And so, that basically became sort-of a font revival with a little extra's.
ORIENTFAHRTEN (Pro) than took this to a whole other level, This refor-mation wasn't guided by Ottomar's original poster-lettering, but rather a remodeling and amelioration of my initial work.
Many glyphs were fully re-invented, others only just partially improved.
In addition to this, many new things were introduced as well. For example, the font was further ornated with various typographic elements and bits, reminiscent of calligraphic hand lettering. Turning this into a much more attractive looking little novelty.
Also some “technical” restructuring of the Unicode character mapping, to creating more user-friendly text formatting properties.
Since it is a semi-connected script, certain characters were deliboratly disconnect and some weren't. For example, the uppercase letters almost all disconnect, whereas the majority of lowercase letters will connect by default. A set of glyphs alternate forms was included that allow to break the 'connected' flow of a text.
These also function sort-of as “Contextual Substitutions”, but without OpenType's automated glyph-stream lookup classes. Yet these do allow the manual control over word-endings and word-space situations. So when a default-glyph is followed by a white-space, a glyph-alternate form could than be selected to replace the default-character encoding and improve overall aesthetics and natural flow of text. These substitutions are located in the “Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms” and “Private Use Area's” Unicode blocks. In addition to the default alphabet letters the font also includes numerous symbols and punctuation marks, as well as ligatures.
As for the “numberscomp” that is currently in progress:
This font was specially fitted with 5 different schemes for text figure arrangement.
• Didot-(old style) non-lining (font default)
• Traditional-(old style) non-lining
• Clean-(modern) lining
• Tradidotional-(old style) non-lining
• Ornate-(modern) lining
— This does temporarily create a new problem for me though... As this would be my fourth submission to the competition, where a maximum of only three font submissions is allowed. Now, which of these previous entries am I going to eliminate?!

is there a recreation of the "HAPAG-" text?
@SUMMER: Not that I know of.. I know pretty similar fonts, but a dedicated recreation I really can't tell.

I love this one the most, I love retro scripts, Cyrillic will look interesting in it. You've very cleverly added handwritten elements to the numbers.
I think it's worth removing the STF_PSYCHOPUNK ZYPE-FACE, because it's a copy of an existing font, although not against the rules, but not in priority.

Guess we both have the same idea on interpreting the numerals! Currently still working on my submissions, but I wish I could interpret more of the oldstyle figures that past typographers have done, specifically the ones where it occupies fully from the ascender to the descender barriers.
You did a great job in honoring the original lettering for your typeface. I'd reckon you can go further with the numerals by doing more alternate designs. Perhaps more ball terminals for 2, 3 and 5? Nice work overall!
I love how you have included different numerals styles. This must be the first fontstruction with so many variations.
@four: Thanks for the appreciation. I did it to demonstrate that although very rare, the traditional non-lining (oldstyle) and lining (modern) text figures aren't just the only two forms. And that experimentation is allowed as long as proper rhythm of text flow is maintained. About this being the first fontstruction to have this many scheme variations I don't know, I did fonts with multiple text figure schemes before.

Although I didn't necessarily aimed this to be a convincing or accurate revival, I tried to preserve a strong reference to the original form. I'm glad it is noticable. But the main objective was to dive a little deeper into the cursive handwriting style.

—Yeah I like the various schemes, too bad that the fonts experimenting with this are rare. But like you encountered yourself, it doesn't seem to work well in every situation. I think its especially difficult to implement when vertical distribution of letter-parts is symmetrical. So with the mid-sections are more or less centered.

—Normally that would've been the logical way to go indeed, I didn't because I was hoping I could cramp some more subtle variations into the numeral set. Now, your comment managed to get me curious, so I went on and to noodling around a bit and I came up with some idea's. But I guess that at this point its already too late to get them incorporated into the font before the contest ends.

You should keep those that aren't fully rounded at the corners. Both the ball terminals and ones without both works fine. It's such moments where it'd be nice to have OpenType alternate features included in Fontstruct, but that'd be asking for too much isn't it (╥﹏╥)
I like the default ones best, but also those last are very good, they match the semi-rounded "pattern".
Personaly I'm most confident about the default ones as well..

I know its not allowed to make physical changes to a contest font submission during jury trials (not that I was about to make any to begin with)
But I guess for a contest entry that was checking all the boxes required for it to participate within the guidelines of the contest, I guess that adding another additional sample image wouldn't be problematic, right?
Neither does the image include any of the Text figures from the font..
It solely involves the font's script functionality and use of several contextual substitutions in a small chunck of more advanced Body Copy.
