'Repertor' is a display typeface inspired by hand-rendered calligraphy and brush stroke textures. Starting from the word 'squishy', I thought about how children play with very tactile things. If something has a tactile nature it will appeal to children to play with it and 'squish' it. From this I explored how sponges are very squeezable and photographed them in different ways. Alongside this thought process I was also sketching water in letter forms and loved how it appears to have a squishy texture in itself because it is fluid. A font initially designed on isometric paper in response to my 'words' brief at UWE. 'Ornate' was the word selected from a list as a starting point. My interest in isometric designs was triggered by Jakob Runge's Fracmetrica typeface. And I know my typeface isn't truly isometric; it's damn hard to create isometric angles on Fontstruct, especially as this is my first font on here. Any constructive criticism, suggestions or advice will be greatly received. This san serif, textured, bold font is inspired by the old cast iron type on train carts. When I discovered the old train carts down at the 'Bristol Harbour Railway' I was fascinated by these incredible forms. To create the structure of these characters I worked from one of the rubbings I took of a particularly nice iron plate and then scanned it into the computer to replicate the letters which where missing. I created this font based on the word ‘vibration’. I looked at sound waves and visual interpretations of vibration which led to a glitchy image that didn’t have clear lines. This font was based on the word ornate. It draws inspiration from neo-classical architecture, tattoos the base outline takes elements from church windows holding the inner detailing which was somewhat inspired by a combination of knit-work and the forms within the glass holding together stain glass windows. The flourishes and filigree forms are a more simplistic take on tattoo lettering. i am currently studying graphic design at the university of the west of england (UWE). i chose to design a typeface derived from the word reflection. i looked at symmetry and geometric shapes when designing my font, i wanted to make it look simple, clean and effective so by using a large grid i created a bold text thats easily legible. personally i think the lowercase typeface works better when used in large body texts but the uppercase looks powerful when used for titles, logo's and informative text headings as its eye catching and different. fontstruct is full of complicated typefaces so i wanted to show the opposite; geometrefection is a great example of simple typefaces that can be created on fontstruct.]]> https://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/731920/geometrefection Wed, 07 Nov 2012 14:29:25 +0000
Conduit is a display font inspired by electricity pylon designs from around the world. Each letter has a sturdy, structured look, featuring latticed crossbeams and a thick angular outline. Conduit is great for making an impact if used sparingly, but not so good for large bodies of text. This font was made as a response to a brief given to me for my Graphic Design course. we were invited to chose a theme for a list of words, I chose decay. My inspiration originally came from my everyday walk to Uni; past old factories, over a disused railway bridge and past an old cricket ground. I then started to broaden my view of decay and looked at the way it effects different things including the decay theory (a theory used my psychologists about memory) and then finally I narrowed it down to dead tress. Spaztec was origanally inspired by the word "ornate". I began by looking at jewelry and "flourishes" on other fonts. After playing around with shapes and curves I realised i hadn't been thinking outside of the box. Ornate could have different meanings and take many forms. I then took interest in Aztec and Native American prints.
