Faq : What about non-latin fonts? Arabic, Hebrew etc. ?

FontStruct has only partial support for non-latin fonts.

While you can create individual letters from many non-latin scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew and many South- and East-Asian scripts with FontStruct, the downloaded fonts will not be fully functional.

For example with Arabic fonts, initial, medial and final glyphs will not appear as you type in desktop software such as Word.

Fonts which fully support non-latin scripts are much more complicated than latin fonts. They must contain a lot of complex, additional information which describes how letters are subsituted for other letters and how letters combine. This additional information is not added by FontStruct. We hope to add such functionality at some point in the future.

In the meantime, the only way to add such functionality is to

  1. Complete your font is FontStruct and download it
  2. Edit the file in desktop font editing software such as FontForge or Glyphs which allow you to add the OpenType features needed for many non-latin scripts. Note that this is not an easy task and requires a good understanding of the OpenType format
