Well, now I know. Nothing smaller than about 50 gridspaces (tops of ascenders to bottom of descenders)is fine enough to cope with eccentric character-widths.

Doh, dyslexic twit. Spelling mistrakes in the sampler again.

On a large grid size, I usually add an extra grid space to the capitals using the letter width function. It always seems to balance better with the lower case then.

Looking at your sample. The capitals look tight. Either add one space to them, or subtract one from the lower case.

Thanks for the tip, 'nippa. Not long ago I discovered that caps look better (more in proportion) if I extend the radius of the curves by a few bricks each side. Such an obvious thing, but it took me a long time to discover what should have been plain. The same with spacing. From now on I can do as you suggest as a default position for cap placement and tighten individual glyphs as need be. I've been working toward this for a while, I know -- I just hadn't thought of it.

I think perhaps the reason a lot of my designs look a little chaotic is because I've just "done" rather than applied a scheme. That's all very well, as far as it goes, but I understand more and more (particularly as a result of thalamic's challenge to me) the need for an underpinning process.

It was a revelation to discover how much better Infrastruct looked after I'd weeded out most of my usual habits. Maybe I can improve even further.

Great work, intaglio – what a beatiful geometric high-contrast semi-serif. I find the subtle twist on the round glyphs specially elegant.

Two suggestions, if I may: make the 'r' more similar to the 'n', and make the lower right arm of the 'f' a bit shorter.

Wonderful Intaglio. I dig those little stub serifs. Again, this one is a pretty straight forward shot but well balanced with all those intaglioisms featured throughout.
