I always find it easier working on a larger scale - this enables more freedom to use composites (see Support/Getting Started).

A lot of work has been done in recent years in this area and I can recommend using djnippa's - http://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/all_composites_saved_in_my_bricks

I have put together a 'toolbox' of composites (on 'E') that I copy and paste into any font that I am working on.
