This typeface was based on the theme 'Messy'. I tried out a few experiment through sketches and rendering, trying to get as messy as I can and also at the same time challenge myself in creating something messy. I looked up on the word messy for different sort of meanings to it, and I also rendered down all sorts of images to get the right font to the theme. I did mini cut outs, played around with colours, tried using all sorts of lines and rendering. I finally came up with a way to portray the theme, using ink/ paint. We always encounter smudges and splatters in our work and it becomes a big mess. I also found the inspirations through several artist, especially Paul Jackson Pollock who did abstract paint pouring.

This is the font I created as a graphic design student at UWE, it is based on the themes messy and disintegrate.
The letterforms are based on Federico Landini's font Excellens but with something more.
The idea behind this font was to recreate Excellens font but in a new and more disintegrated way.
To create it I first rebuilt the basic letterforms on fonstruct, which I then started dismantling different size triangular sections, but still keeping the letters legible. I then also added the triangular sections next to the letters in order to create a sense of disintegration and movement.
The font is designed to be used selectively and not for large pieces of text.

My first project as a student at UWE studying Graphic Design was to create a font using FontStruct. I chose to develop the theme messy, I thought to myself ‘what makes a mess?’ This led me to the idea of toast, it’s messy and especially when burnt. I cut letters out of burnt toast, I really liked the effect it had made therefore it influenced me to develop it further within FontStruct. I decided to use Helvetica as a guide purely for its simple, clean letterforms, hence why I have named my typeface ‘Burnt Helvetica’. I wanted to really capture the essence of the burnt areas with shading, therefore my inspiration came from cutting the burnt toast around a Helvetica letter template, photographing it and printing it on graph paper. Due to the nature of the font being messy I wouldn’t use it on anything formal or of importance, I feel that it would be suitable to be used within children associated designs, definitely food related designs and perhaps something rather playful or of course, messy. This is my first attempt using FontStruct all feedback is welcome.

3 YEARS ON FONTSTRUCT!
Every letter will have 5 forms. One initial form (placed on uppercase), two medial forms (one on lowercase, one on LatinExtA/B), one final form (LatinExtA/B), and one isolated form (LatinExtA/B).
Digits will have only one medial form. The isolated form will be the standard form, while the initial, medial and final forms will be on LatinExtA/B.

Letters drawn with a crayon in my own messy handwriting. Some letters are bolder than the others for a more childish feel. Look in sample text to see what I mean.
